RIP, Paint Shop Pro

A picture is worth a thousand words. Since I probably won't be updating this blog any more (I doubt PSP will ever be improved or made open-source), I thought I'd leave you with a nice little picture, which captures PSP's fall into obscurity throughout the years. Enjoy.

That's sad indeed, I used to love psp but theb corel came and really drove it into the abyss :(

this is absurd, photoshop was heavy and photoshop was the most complete, psp was light and it had sufficient features

now photoshop is the lightest and still the most complete, psp is now the heavier and still have the same features.

lot of things makes me lol... the brushes, very cool, yes, but i think doesn't exist any cpu that can make them working smoothly.

corel, thanks for killing OUR software

I hung onto PSP8 for years and years and decided to see what the most current version was. I was surprised that it was now Corel? PSP was definitely the program to use in the late 90's when working on homepages and we needed nifty graphics to spiffy them up. I miss those days and the people that showed me all the tricks and tips to make backgrounds and banners.

I don't know if there's a more appropriate place to ask this, but I've come across another person who is well versed in PSP and has a website that doesn't look like no one has touched it since 1996.

I'm a college sophomore and I have PSP7, which I got from my dad and have been using for maybe 6 or 7 years now. Everything I know is self-taught, and there are basically no resources on learning to use PSP more in-depth, and especially not how to use PSP7. I know I should probably move to Photoshop but a) money! and b) I am so apprehensive about trying to learn a new program. Things like pasting a freaking layer become so complicated when you do it by rote in another program.

Anyway.

What I am dying to know - and there might not be a solution - is WHY does PSP insist on having the stroke of text encroach on the fill?! And is there a way to get around it? If I'm working on a small image (like a width of 250px) then a line width of 2, sometimes a line width of ONE is too thick. The fill basically disappears or just looks bad. If I make the text large enough that the line and fill are pleasing proportions, then convert it to a raster layer and resize it, I lose clarity. That doesn't look good either. And, of course since it's no longer a vector I can't mess with the proportions or anything like that.

Is there ANY way to get PSP to add the line of text to the outside rather than having it eat away at the inside? Does that even make sense?

If anyone can answer this question I would be ridiculously grateful. Thanks!

I've used this since JASC 3.0 in the way back machine. I'm on X4 but sadly, I think I will probably drop it and move on Photoshop. I've enjoyed the money savings of PSP but its just a frustrating program now and it's hard to share tips since the user base is so small. As for the poster asking about the text fill, yes that's a darn irritating trait that I haven't figured out either.

They have sunk their own ship here.

I used PSP 10 for a long time and liked it a lot. then I bought a new computer and wanted to upgrade everything.

I know that I have made a stupid mistake but I arranged to receive the latest version 'PSP X5 Ultimate' as a Christmas prezzy. It's midnight on Christmas Eve and I could not install it fast enough. Or try to.

Then it looked as though the usual features are downloaded as bolt-ons. Then a massive service pack. I'm right at the end of my download limit for the month and this lot must have been massive, given how long it has taken. So I also owe extra to my ISP for this bollocks.

First impression: What a heap of crap!
It all looks to be dumbed down. The menu is minimal and where are all the palettes, the layers, colours, etc. I Can't find any of the familiar tools out of the box.

Worst of all, I can't find the selection tool anywhere.

I'm off to bed after spending three hours of becoming more and more frustrated. Bag of crap!

I'll give it a few more goes but I think I will end up uninstalling and throwing it in the bin.

Correction. The tools were not too difficult ot find after getting the idea of the new interface but they did not appear to offer anything new compared to PSP 10. So I might as well have stayed with the old version.
